Intermediary injury

Intermediary injuries affect the basal ganglia and/or thalami and are associated with diffuse axonal injury and poor prognosis. 

They are a shearing injury of the lenticulostriate arteries and result in hemorrhagic contusions, which are often bilateral.

  • hyperdense hemorrhagic contusions of the lentiform nucleus and/or thalami
  • often bilateral
