Osteochondroma fracture

Pain and local swelling in right thigh following a fall during a volleyball match. Knee range of motion is restricted and movement elicits pain.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female

Radiographs of the right knee

Fracture through the base of the stalk of an osteochondroma arising from the medial distal femur. There’s also a fibrous cortical defect in the proximal tibia.

Spontaneous healing of osteochondroma fracture one month later.

Case Discussion

Fracture through the base of pedunculated osteochondromas is an infrequent complication of the most common benign bone tumor. These fractures can heal without treatment and complication.
